Merimbula Lake is a large estuary continually open to the sea. The lake covers approximately 4.5 square kilometres with plenty of places to fish.
From the mouth of the lake to the Merimbula Bridge, large numbers of Whiting and trevally often congregate. Bream and Dusky Flathead are also caught in this area but above the bridge is usually a better option.
The bridge itself is a good spot to fish also. Depending on the time and tide, large Trevally frequent this area as well as Taylor, Dusky Flathead and Luderick.
From the bridge through the channel to the top lake is fairly similar to the front of the lake. Apart from the channel itself, the water is quite shallow and does hold whiting in numbers at times. They are no easier to catch here either.
The last stretch of the channel before the Top Lake is very shallow and care needs to be taken in a boat at low tide to avoid propeller damage. There is a speed limit of 8 knots from the sea entrance of the lake all the way to the top lake.
Once in the Top Lake it’s, fish anywhere. Along the edges of the oyster leases is predominantly weed and along the edge of the weed is one place to fish.
The lake holds large numbers of big Taylor at times and these can be found right in the middle, this makes the entire lake is a popular fishing spot.
Large Salmon enter the lake during the winter months and are great fun to catch on light gear. They travel around the lake very quickly and normally by the time one is landed, they have to be found again.
The lake is home to many species, including Dusky Flathead, Bream, Trevally, Taylor, Mulloway, Pinkie Snapper, Flounder, Garfish, Whiting, Leather Jackets, Tarwhine and Blue Swimmer Crabs to name a few. Salmon, even Kingfish enter the lake at times, you never know what you might catch.
In 2009 an artificial reef was constructed in Merimbula Lake.
The artificial reef measures approximately 1600 square metres and contains 400 Reef Balls. The reef was funded from recreational fishing license fees by the NSW State Government, Recreational Fishing trust.
